Wordroot SRD (1.2)

Wordroot is a solo, dice-less storytelling system where written language becomes the randomizer.

Instead of rolling dice, describe an action in words. The number of letters in those words determine an outcome pulled from a simple table. Interpret that result as fiction.

The system doesn't attempt to simulate actions. Rather, it exists to surprise you, create complications, and provide storytelling prompts.

Setting and genre-agnostic, Wordroot is particularly suited to solo RPGs, journaling games, writing exercises, and exploring worlds and characters.

Core mechanic inspired by Alfred Valley's DieDream.

Update 08/20/26: Resolved some inconsistencies in the rules, added more robust gameplay examples, and converted from a text file to a proper PDF.
